Can Tho Tourism: Innovatively Integrating with Net Zero Tourism

Net Zero Tourism – a low-impact form of tourism that minimizes environmental harm during its operation – has become a globally favored trend in recent years. In Can Tho, Net Zero Tourism is being creatively developed, offering visitors a variety of unique and memorable experiences

From late February through March 2025, around 1,700 teachers and students from the Vietnam Australia International School (VAS) will take part in the exciting and creative program “Can Tho – Road to Net Zero.” This journey of discovery, designed and operated by Haiau Educursions, is based on the natural and cultural resources of Can Tho.

Mr. Ly Duy Huynh, Head of Research and Product Development at Haiau Educursions, shared: “The idea for ‘Can Tho – Road to Net Zero’ was formed from many key elements, including important themes such as local cultural heritage, natural resources, and the environment. Both Haiau Educursions and VAS share the common goal of creating experiences that encourage young people to engage with, explore, and take action for the community — particularly in the area of environmental protection.”

During the journey, what impressed me the most was Mr. Bay Bon's fish raft. There, he shared with us a lot of knowledge about fish and how to protect them. From what he told us, I learned about environmental protection messages in tourism activities," said student Duong Hoang Minh Phuc from Ho Chi Minh City. "When I listened to what Mr. Bay Bon shared, I gained more knowledge about different fish species and ways to protect the environment. From now on, I won’t catch small fish and will use items made from environmentally friendly materials," he added.

Mr. Ly Duy Huynh, Head of the Research and Product Development Department at Haiau Educursions, shared: “With ‘Can Tho – Road to Net Zero’, we aim to change individual perceptions and turn them into appropriate actions. Therefore, the highlight of the journey is the project ‘For a Prosperous Son Islet in the Future’, which the students carry out. They meet with each local tourism model on Son Islet, identify and evaluate the application of Net Zero standards at each household, and record a video of that journey. This video will be presented for feedback from teachers and experts at the Climate Change Research Institute – Can Tho University.” It is clear that “Can Tho – Road to Net Zero” is a journey that explores Can Tho from a new, dynamic, and creative perspective. It offers not only local cultural experiences but also contributes to environmental protection efforts.

In reality, Net Zero Tourism is not only a global trend but also a strategic approach that brings numerous benefits to both tourists and the environment. Most importantly, zero-emission tourism helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions from tourism activities, making a positive contribution to global efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Meanwhile, the Mekong Delta is one of the regions most severely affected by climate change. Vietnam’s Tourism Development Master Plan for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2045, also identifies the goal of developing sustainable and innovative tourism based on green growth. It aims to maximize tourism’s contribution to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, protect the environment, and respond flexibly and effectively to risks and climate change. Therefore, developing Net Zero Tourism has become a shared goal for many destinations and localities. In the process of integration, in Can Tho, many destinations and travel agencies have proactively adopted zero-emission tourism, gradually creating their own distinctive mark.
